The Coatesville Area School District Police Department (CASDPD) currently consists of one (1) Chief of Police, three (3) full-time, 10-month officers, and one (1) part-time police officer. All are sworn School Police Officers under Act 67 of 2019 and have completed all school-related training as required by the act. All School Police Officers are required to complete the same training required of any other municipal police officer serving in Pennsylvania. The officers are scheduled to be present during the entire school day during hours when students and staff are present, and officers may also be utilized for policing special events/extracurricular activities as determined by the needs of the district.
The CASDPD is charged with keeping our school safe by coordinating and enforcing school security and all law enforcement related issues. Additionally, the School Police Officers help to educate students throughout the year on a variety of age-appropriate topics, such as underage drinking, retail theft, safe driving education, and substance abuse.
School Police Officers are not in our schools solely to react to situations, but they are equally there to be proactive, diminishing the need to be reactive. The officers are present in all school buildings, working with students to build positive relationships, and helping to identify and stem problems before they can escalate. School Police Officers help to keep the lines of communication open between students, families, administration, and law enforcement.
Our School Police Officers have a vast level of experience serving in other police agencies within the Commonwealth. Police officers employed by the Coatesville Area School District have the same authority, powers, privileges, and immunities as bestowed on all Pennsylvania police officers while on or off duty. They have the authority to exercise the same powers granted under the authority of law, including but not limited to the issuance of summary citations, as well as the power to arrest.
The CASD Police jurisdiction includes all territory within the boundaries of the district (75 square miles) and all property, real and personal, outside the boundaries of the district that is owned, leased, or rented by the District or otherwise under the District's control.
